John Buchan (1875, Perth, Escòcia - 1940, Montreal, Quebec) va ser un escriptor i polític conegut per les seves novel·les d'aventures. Fill d'un clergue, Buchan va estudiar Filologia clàssica a Glasgow i Oxford, on ja va demostrar el seu talent per a la literatura. Tota la seva vida es va moure entre la política i les lletres, ja que va treballar tant per a l'alt comissionat de Sud-àfrica com per a l'editorial anglesa Nelson. Durant la Primera Guerra Mundial va ser director d'informació del Govern britànic. Aquesta feina el va inspirar per crear Richard Hannay, protagonista de moltes de les seves aventures, la més coneguda de les quals és Els trenta-nou esglaons, adaptada al cinema per Alfred Hitchcock. Després de la guerra va ocupar diversos càrrecs polítics, i el 1935 va ser nomenat governador del Canadà, país on va morir el 1940 a causa d'una hemorràgia cerebral.
