Al igual que la protagonista de su novela, Jean Kwok llegó a Nueva York siendo una niña, sin saber una sola palabra de inglés. Como la familia había gastado todo su dinero en el viaje, se tuvieron que poner a trabajar en los sórdidos talleres de confección de Chinatown, que están magistralmente descritos en esta novela. Sin embargo, gracias a sus excelentes resultados escolares, Jean Kwok pudo ingresar en la Universidad de Harvard. Durante años, siguió compaginando sus estudios con diversos trabajos, desde lavaplatos a profesora de inglés para inmigrantes asiáticos. Por razones sentimentales, la autora se trasladó a Holanda donde empezó a trabajar como traductora en la universidad de Leiden. En la actualidad, vive en Holanda con su marido y sus dos hijos y se dedica en exclusiva a la creación literaria.
