Penelope Chetwode (1910-1986), hija del Lord Chetwode, mariscal de campo y jefe de la caballería británica, montaba a caballo antes de saber andar. En 1930 su padre fue destinado a la India, donde la familia vivió tres años, en los que Penelope viajó por el norte del país. Se casó en 1933 con un crítico de cine trasladándose a vivir a Berkshire. Allí escribía recetas de cocina para el Daily Express y domaba caballos. Con 35 años se convirtió al catolicismo. Tras el recorrido por Andalucía que narra en este libro, viajó a la India en una furgoneta con unos jóvenes amigos de los que hacía de cocinera. Desde entonces regresó al país asiático con frecuencia hasta su muerte con 75 años, cuando guiaba una expedición por Himachal Pradesh.
