Harper Lee fue galardonada en 2007 con la Medalla Presidencial de la Libertad por su contribución a la literatura. Su padre fue un abogado que trabajó para el estado de Alabama desde 1926 a 1938. Lee no fue la típica niña femenina y disfrutaba de la compañía de su compañero de escuela Truman Capote.
