Durante su vida viajó por Estados Unidos como vendedor y taxista, y su variada carrera incluyó tareas como reportajes deportivos, guardaespaldas, doblaje o redacción para películas y revistas. Sus novelas incluyen Luces de Hollywood, Corazón de hielo y ¿Acaso no matan también a los caballos? Esta última conoció una gran repercusión al ser adaptada a la gran pantalla en 1969 bajo dirección de Sydney Pollack con el título Danzad, danzad, malditos (en Hispanoamérica, Baile de ilusiones).
