Nació en 1933 en Rodesia del Norte, actual Zambia, cuando el país era todavía un protectorado británico. Su padre,ganadero, era propietario de una hacienda de más de 12.000 hectáreas de bosques, montañas y sabanas en el corazón de África, en donde Smith creció rodeado de animales salvajes y un entorno propicio para vivir aventuras. Estudió en Sudáfrica, trabajó como periodista y fue contable. En 1964, a raíz de la publicación del éxito de ventas Cuando comen los leones, dejó todo para dedicarse de lleno a la narrativa. A partir de entonces ha publicado una treintena de novelas que le han hecho merecer el apelativo de «maestro de la aventura». Hoy en día, Wilbur Smith es uno de los mayores bestseller del mundo, con más de 130 millones de ejemplares de libros vendidos en el mundo. Duomo ediciones ha publicado sus novelas Como el mar, En Peligro, Río sagrado y El destino del cazador.
