Louise Erdrich va néixer a Wahpeton, Dakota del Nord, el 1954. De família germano-americana i chippewa, està casada amb Michael Dorris, col·laborador en les seves obres de creació. El 1984 es va donar a conèixer amb un llibre de poemes, Jacklight, i una novel·la, Remei d'amor (Quaderns Crema, 1988), que va obtenir un gran èxit en les moltes llengües a les quals es va traduir. L'aparició de la versió catalana va suscitar també una reacció unànime i entusiasta de la crítica, que va considerar-la «una glopada d'aire fresc que és, al mateix temps, absolutament dramàtica» (Francesc Parcerisas, El País) i un llibre «escrit, no hi ha dubte, amb una saviesa que ve de l'amor» (Joan Triadú, Avui). A Quaderns Crema també ha publicat La reina de la remolatxa (1990).
