Jaroslav Ha?ek es posiblemente uno de los escritores checos más importantes de la literatura contemporánea y maestro indiscutible de Bohumil Hrabal y Milan Kundera. Hijo de un profesor de matemáticas, nació en Praga en 1883 y murió en Lipnice en 1923. Estudió en la Academia Comercial de Praga y antes de ser famoso como escritor y periodista se ganó la vida como empleado de banca. La última parte de Las aventuras del valeroso soldado Schwejk, interrumpida por la muerte de Ha?ek, fue completada por el escritor checo K. Vanek.
