Paulo Coelho (1947) alcanzou sona internacional a partir da publicación de O alquimista (1988), un relato filosófico do que se venderon xa máis de dez millóns de exemplares e que foi traducido a máis de trinta linguas. Coelho, nacido en Brasil e residente en Río de Xaneiro, escribiu esta novela despois de viaxar por todo o mundo e, moi especialmente, despois de percorrer o Camiño de Santiago, experiencia da que tamén xurdiu o seu libro O diario de um mago (1987). A súa literatura caracterízase por un forte simbolismo narrativo e pola busca de camiños espirituais inspirados polo que el chama a lenda persoal de cada individuo. Tras o éxito mundial de O alquimista, Coelho publicou outros libros como Na margem do Rio Piedra eu sentei e chorei (1994), O Monte Cinco (1996), Manual do guerreiro da luz (1997) ou Veronika decide morrer, tamén publicado por Galaxia.
