(Würzburg, Alemania,) es escritora y antropóloga social. Doctorada en Antropología por la Universidad de Texas, su campo de interés se centra en la comunidad turca y en Oriente Medio, materias que actualmente imparte como profesora en la Universidad de Boston. Ha publicado tres novelas ambientadas en el Estambul del siglo XIX y protagonizadas por el magistrado Kamil Pasha: El sello del sultán (2006), La prueba abisinia (2008) y El ladrón de invierno (2010). La primera de ellas fue considerada uno de los mejores debuts literarios del año.
