Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) inició su experiencia antártica como tercer oficial de Robert F. Scott en la Expedición Antártica Británica de 1901-1904 («E. Discovery»), cuyo objetivo era llegar lo más al sur en línea recta sobre la barrera de hielo y alcanzar el Polo Sur. Fascinado por la Antártida, Shackleton decidió volver y liderar la Expedición Antártica Imperial Británica de 1907-1909 («E. Nimrod»), segunda de estas características, y la primera de las tres expediciones que él dirigió; las otras dos fueron: la Expedición Imperial Transantártica de 1914-1917 («E. Endurance»), y la Expedición Shackleton–Rowett, de 1921-1922. Sus restos reposan en el cementerio de Grytviken, Georgia del Sur.
