Rachel Carson (1907-1964), tras obtener su título superior de biología marina por la Universidad Johns Hopkins, enseñó zoología en la Universidad de Maryland y trabajó para el U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Desde ahí escribió Under the Sea-Wind (1941), The Edge of the Sea (1955),  El mar que nos rodea (1961) y Primavera silenciosa (1962), una crítica feroz a la industria de los pesticidas. Este último se convirtió muy pronto en un best seller que provocó un gran revuelo en la clase política estadounidense y difundió un mensaje ecologista que todavía hoy sigue vigente.
