Joseph O'Connor nació en Dublín en 1963. Se graduó en Inglés e Historia en el University College de Dublín. Ha escrito no ficción, obras de teatro, guiones cinematográficos y varias novelas con muy buena acogida de crítica y de público, entre las que destacan Cowboys and Indians, finalista del Whitbread Prize, Desperadoes, The Salesman y, más recientemente, Inishowen. Tiene, entre otros premios, el Sunday Tribune/Hennessy First Fiction y el New Irish Writer of the Year, el Miramax Screenwriting Award y el In Dublin Magazime Award a la mejor obra de teatro irlandesa. El crimen del «Estrella del Mar» ha ocupado un lugar destacado en numerosos galardones internacionales, incluido el IMPAC de Dublín, ha ganado el Acerbi Fundation Award en Italia, el prestigioso Prix Millepages en Francia y el Prix Litteraire European Madeleine Zepter. Pronto será llevada al cine y está siendo traducida a dieciocho idiomas.
