Sapphire —Ramona Lofton—, poeta, “performer” y agitadora cultural, nació en California en 1950 y vive en Nueva York. Entre sus publicaciones podemos citar American Dreams, una colección de poemas calificada por la crítica como una de las más tocables de la década de los 90. También ha enseñado a leer y a escribir a adolescentes y a adultos de Harlem y el Bronx durante varios años. Entertainment Weekly ha dicho de ella que “conoce la vida secreta de la ciudad mejor que las estrellas de rap y los sociólogos”. Precious, dirigida por Lee Daniela y basada en la novela Push de Sapphire, obtuvo el Premio Público en el Festival Internacional de Toronto y se impuso en la 15ª edición del Sundance Film Festival ganando tres de los premios más importantes: el Gran Premio del Jurado, el Gran Premio del Público y una distinción especial del jurado a la actriz protagonista, Mo’Nique. Obtuvo además el Premio del Público en el Festival de San Sebastián. La edición en paperback de Push se encaramó en el número uno de la lista de los títulos más vendidos del New York Times.
