Jesmyn Ward nació en 1977 en DeLisle, Misisipi, ­EE. UU. Cursó el Master of Fine Arts en la Universidad de Míchigan, donde ganó cinco premios Hopwood de ensayo, teatro y narrativa. Entre 2008 y 2010 consiguió la beca Stegner en la Universidad de Stanford, y en 2010-2011 la Universidad de Misisipi la nombró Escritora Residente Grisham. Con Quedan los huesos, su segunda novela, ganó el National Book Award en 2011, máximo galardón de las letras americanas, y el prestigioso ALEX Award en 2012.
