Nicholas Shakespeare nació en 1957. Hijo de un diplomático, pasó buena parte de su juventud en el Extremo Oriente y Sudamérica. Se ha desempeñado como periodista para la BBC y como editor literario en The Times, The Daily Telegraph, y The Sunday Telegraph. Entre otras, Pasos de baile, elegida en 1997 como la mejor novela del año y trasladada al cine en 2001 por John Malkovich. En 1993, fue elegido uno de los nuevos talentos literarios de Reino Unido por la revista Granta y, desde 1999, es miembro de la Royal Society of Literature.
