Samuel Johnson (Lichfield, 1709-Westminster, 1784), ensayista, poeta, crítico y lexicógrafo, fue una de las figuras más sobresalientes de la sociedad inglesa del siglo xviii. Fue autor del primer diccionario de la lengua inglesa (que terminó en 1975), de la sátira Rasselas (1759) y de los ensayos reunidos en diez volúmenes bajo el título The Lives of the English Poets (1779-1781). Ha pasado a la historia de la literatura como el primer crítico de las obras de Shakespeare: hoy publicamos el prefacio a la edición de las obras del dramaturgo inglés, que Johnson terminó, en ocho volúmenes, en 1765.
