Daniel Keyes nació en Nueva York en 1927. Con diecisiete años entró en la marina de los Estados Unidos. Tras terminar su servicio volvió a los estudios cursando psicología en la Universidad de Brooklyn. Mientras seguía estudiando en esta Universidad Literatura Inglesa, trabajó como fotógrafo de modas y dio clase de inglés.   Dos hechos importantes para Keyes tuvieron lugar en 1966: fue nombrado catedrático de inglés y Composición Literaria de la Universidad de Ohio y recibió el Premio Nébula (premio concedido desde 1965 por la Asociación de Escritores de Ciencia Ficción de América (SFWA), y está considerado el Nóbel de la ciencia ficción) por su primera novela, Flores para Algernon.   Dos años después esta novela fue llevada al cine con el título de Charlie, donde su protagonista Cliff Robertson recibió el Oscar por su interpretación.   Daniel Keyes ha publicado además The touch, The Fifht Sally y Until.
