Fue monja católica durante siete años. En 1969, decepcionada en su búsqueda espiritual, deja el convento y estudia literatura para dedicarse a la enseñanza en la Universidad de Londres y en un colegio público. Desde 1982 se dedica a escribir ensayos y dirigir documentales sobre las grandes religiones monoteístas. Autora de libros tan importantes como Una Historia de Dios, Mahoma, biografía del Profeta o Breve historia del mito, su trabajo se ha enfocado hacia la tolerancia en materia espiritual y el diálogo interreligioso.
