Robert Louis Stevenson va néixer a Edimburg el 1850. Als vint anys va tenir una afecció respiratòria que el va turmentar al llarg de tota la seva vida. En un viatge cap als mars del Sud, va arribar a Tantira, una illa on Stevenson va retrobar la seva salut. Més tard es va traslladar a Honolulú i finalment es va instal·lar a Samoa amb tota la seva família, on va morir víctima d'una hemorràgia cerebral a l'edat de 44 anys.Entre les seves obres, destaquen La fletxa negra, L'estrany cas del Dr. Jekyll i Mr. Hyde, i la magistral novel·la, L'Illa del tresor.
