Edward Lear nació en 1812 en un suburbio londinense, fue el vigésimo de una familia de veintiún hijos. A los siete años, cayó víctima de una epilepsia, ?el demonio? como él llama, bajo cuya sombra vivió hasta su muerte en 1889. Se ganó la vida dibujando desde los quince años. En 1835 fue empleado en el Zoological Society de Londres para la que ilustró varios libros de pájaros y otros animales. Pero su vida fue más bien itinerante, bohemia e inestable. Católico practicante en un principio, evolucionó con los años hacia la crítica sarcástica de la retórica y el dogmatismo de los clérigos. En 1846 escribió Book of Nonsense que le dio a conocer y provocó cierto escándalo en los círculos ilustrados. En 1871, publicó More Nonsense.
