Richard Yates nació en 1926 en Yonkers, en el seno de una familia bastante inestable. Estudió en Avon, Connecticut, donde descubrió su vocación por la literatura y el periodismo. Más tarde se incorporó al ejército y cumplió tareas en Francia y Alemania. Al regresar a Nueva York trabajó como periodista, redactor publicitario y ghost writer -escribió algunos de los discursos del senador Robert Kennedy-, y sus relatos comenzaron a aparecer en distintas publicaciones. En 1961 su novela Vía revolucionaria fue finalista del prestigioso National Book Award y le valió un amplio reconocimiento del público y de la crítica. Luego siguieron, entre otras, A Good School y Las hermanas Grimes (The Easter Parade), y los libros de relatos Once tipos de soledad y Liars in Love. Dio clases en la Universidad de Columbia, en la de Boston y en la de Iowa. Murió en 1992 en Alabama. La película de Sam Mendes, Revolutionary Road, ha motivado una merecida revaloración de su obra en todo el mundo.
