John Richardson vive a caballo entre Nueva York y Connecticut. Fue profesor en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Slade, en Oxford, entre 1995 y 1996. Es miembro de la Academia Británica y colaborador de las revistas New York Review of Books y Vanity Fair. Richardson es autor de una de las mejores y más conocidas biografías que se han hecho sobre Picasso, la cual fue editada en España por Alianza Editorial (Picasso, I. Una biografía, 1881-1906 y Picasso, II. Una biografía, 1907-1917). El primero de los dos volúmenes obtuvo el premio Whitbread Book of the Year en 1991.
