John Le Carré (Poole, 1931), exprofessor d'Eton i exfuncionari del Ministeri d'Afers Estrangers del Regne Unit, es va fer mundialment famós escrivint novel·les d'espionatge. El gran èxit que va tenir com a novel·lista es va consolidar amb la trilogia El talp, The Honourable Schoolboy i La gent de Smiley. Cal destacar també L'espia que tornava del fred, Un espia perfecte, La Casa Rússia, El sastre de Panamà, El jardiner constant, Amics absoluts, La cançó dels missioners i L'home més buscat. L'any 2001 John le Carré es va adonar que no podia fer ficció "perquè els seus personatges patien les conseqüències del terrorisme internacional i de la lluita antiterrorista".
