Ha Jin nació en 1956 en la provincia china de Liaoning y sirvió durante años en el Ejército de Liberación Popular. Abandonó China en 1985 para estudiar en la Universidad de Brandeis, y en la actualidad es profesor de lengua y literatura inglesas en la Universidad de Boston. Además de poeta, es autor de tres libros de relatos –Ocean of Words (ganador del PEN/Hemingway Award de cuentos), Under the Red Flag (Flannery O’Connor Award) y The Bridegroom (Asian American Literary Award)– y de tres novelas, las tres publicadas por Tusquets Editores. Con la primera, La espera, ganó en 1999 el National Book Award y el PEN/Faulkner Award. Todas estas distinciones han confirmado que Ha Jin es un autor de gran talento cuyas obras ahondan no sólo en la historia y la cultura chinas del siglo xx sino también en las luces y sombras del alma humana.
