James Clavell (Sídney, 1921) fue un novelista, guionista y director, hijo de un oficial de la Marina Real. Siendo un joven oficial de la Artillería Real Británica, fue capturado y enviado a un campo de prisioneros japonés en Singapur, experiencia que usaría posteriormente como inspiración para sus novelas. Clavell vivió muchos años en Vancouver y Los Ángeles, antes de establecerse en Suiza, donde falleció en 1994.
