Nació en Florencia en 1265 y murió en Rávena en 1321. Miembro de la burguesía güelfa, discípulo de Brunetto Latini, desterrado de su ciudad natal en 1302 a consecuencia de las rencillas entre las dos facciones de los güelfos, autor de diversas obras en lengua latina, debe su fama a su producción en lengua vulgar, y particularmente a su Commedia, a la que dieron los exégetas el sobrenombre de Divina.
