Vikram Seth nació en Calcuta en 1952. Estudió política, economía y filosofía en Oxford, y en la Universidad de Stanford, Claifornia, trabajó en una tesis sobre la demografía de la China rural. Ha escrito libros de distinto géneros, todos ellos aclamados por la crítica: una novela en verso, The Golden Gate, varios volúmenes de poesía, entre los que se cuentan The Humble Administrator's Garden y All You Who Sleep Tonight, un libro de viajes, Desde el lago del cielo, y fábulas, Beasty Tales.
