Gilbert Keith Chesterton (Londres, 1874-1936). Crítico, novelista y poeta inglés. A partir de los veinticinco años, empieza a colaborar en periódicos y revistas como crítico de arte. Además de poesía ( < i > El caballero salvaje < /i > , 1900) y de brillantes estudios literarios ( < i > Robert Browning < /i > , < i > Dickens < /i > o < i > Bernard Shaw < /i > , entre 1903 y 1909), Brown se inició en la narrativa detectivesca, con < i > El hombre que fue Jueves < /i > (1908), una de sus obras maestras. A partir de 1911, empezó la serie del Padre Brown, con < i > El candor del Padre Brown < /i > , protagonizada por el célebre sacerdote detective. Muy pronto se sintió atraído por el catolicismo, y, en 1922, abandonó el protestantismo en una ceremonia oficiada por su amigo el sacerdote O´Connor (modelo de su detective Brown). Chesterton es asimismo autor de innumerables poemas, ensayos, artículos, cuentos, libros de viajes y otras tantas obras menores.
