Criada en un ambiente artístico y muy refinado, hija de los actores Gerald du Maurier y Muriel Beaumont, comenzó en el mundo literario con dos auténticos superventas seguidos, La posada de Jamaica (1937) y su gran novela, Rebeca (1938), ambas adaptadas al cine por Hitchcock con gran éxito. Entre 1951 y 1952 aparecen otras dos cimas de su obra, la novela Mi prima Raquel y la colección de relatos The apple tree, que, tras el éxito de una nueva adaptación de Hitchcock con Los pájaros (1963), se retitularía The birds and other stories.
