Paul Theroux (Medford, Massachusetts, 1941) es uno de los escritores de viajes más reconocidos del mundo, así como autor de galardonadas novelas, algunas de ellas llevadas al cine. Su épico viaje entre Gran Bretaña y Japón, El gran bazar del ferrocarril (1972), lo catapultó a la fama y constituye un clásico del género. En 1981 recibió el James Tait Black Memorial Prize por La costa de los mosquitos, posteriormente objeto de una adaptación cinematográfica a cargo de Peter Weir. Entre el resto de su prolífica obra destacan títulos como El viejo Expreso de la Patagonia, En el Gallo de Hierro y Las columnas de Hércules, y libros de ficción como La calle de la media luna (base de la película homónima), Millroy, el mago, Mi historia secreta, Kowloon tong (origen del film La caja china), Hotel Honolulu, Elefanta Suite (Alfaguara, 2008) y La sombra de Naipaul, polémica crónica de su truncada amistad de tres décadas con el Premio Nobel V. S. Naipaul. A Dead Hand, su última novela, será publicada próximamante en Alfaguara.
