William Somerset Maugham nació en 1874 en París, donde vivió hasta los diez años. Estudió Medicina en la Universidad de Heidelberg (Alemania) y en el Saint Thomas Hospital de Londres. El éxito de sus primeras novelas (Liza de Lambert, 1897, o Mrs. Craddock, 1902) orientó su vida hacia la actividad literaria. Como novelista, dramaturgo y ensayista gozó del favor del público y la crítica gracias a la elegancia de su estilo, la agudeza de sus diálogos y los vívidos retratos de la sociedad de su tiempo. Entre sus novelas destacan Servidumbre humana (1915), Soberbia (1919), basada en la vida de Paul Gauguin, y El filo de la navaja (1944). W.S. Maugham falleció en Niza en 1965.
