Herman Melville nació en Nueva York, en 1819. Escritor apasionado y excelso, no conoció en vida el éxito literario más allá del escaso eco que hicieron sus primeras novelas de aventuras y corte autobiográfico. Su obra más extensa y conocida, Moby Dick (1851), pasó totalmente desapercibida. Casi un siglo después de su muerte, escritores vanguardistas norteamericanos y europeos lo rescatan como autor de culto. De entre las obras poco conocidas o publicadas en libros de cuentos destacan Bartleby, el escribiente (1853) y la que a consideramos su obra maestra, Benito Cereno(1855).
