Nació en Estados Unidos (1950) y es la menor de cinco hermanos. Después de estudiar algunos años en un colegio de monjas, se casó muy joven y fue a vivir en Keedysville donde trabajó un tiempo como secretaria. En 1985 se casó con Bruce Wilder, a quién había conocido al encargarle unas estanterías para sus libros. Después de viajar por el mundo abrieron juntos una librería.
