Nació en El Cairo en 1933. Pasó su infancia en Egipto, pero estudió Historia Moderna en el St. Anne?s College de Oxford. Saltó a la fama con «Astercote» (1970), y desde entonces se ha consolidado como autora de literatura infantil, recibiendo importantes galardones, como el Premio Whitbread. Su primera incursión en la literatura para adultos, «The Road to Lichfield» (1977), fue nominada para el Premio Booker, galardón que ganaría en 1985 gracias a «Moon Tiger». Es miembro de la Real Sociedad de Literatura, y en 1989 fue nombrada Oficial de la Orden del Imperio Británico. Vive en Londres.
