Iris Murdoch (Dublín, 1919-Oxford, 1999) estudió en la Badminton School de Bristol y se licenció en Lenguas Clásicas en la Universidad de Oxford. También cursó estudios de Filosofía en Cambridge, donde tuvo como maestro a Ludwig Wittgenstein y publicó el primer estudio en inglés sobre Jean-Paul Sartre. Fue autora de una extensa y variada obra que consta de veintiséis novelas y multitud de poemarios, ensayos y piezas teatrales. En 1997 fue galardonada con el Golden Pen Award como reconocimiento a toda su carrera.
