Nació en Ose, Japón, en 1935. Estudió literatura francesa en la Universidad de Tokio y destacó


como escritor desde sus años de estudiante. A los veintitrés años publicó su primera novela, Arrancad las semillas, fusilad a los niños (1958).





Es autor de varias colecciones de relatos, ensayos y más de veinte novelas, entre las que destacan La presa (1958), Una cuestión personal (1964), ¡Despertad, oh jóvenes de la nueva era! (1983; Seix Barral, 2005), M/T y la historia de las maravillas del bosque (1986; Seix Barral, 2007) y Salto mortal (1999; Seix Barral, 2004). Considerado el escritor japonés más destacado de su generación, en 1994 recibió el Premio Nobel de Literatura, otorgado por segunda vez a un autor de ese país.
