Paul Theroux (Medford, Massachusetts, 1941) es uno de los escritores de viajes más reconocidos del mundo, así como autor de galardonadas novelas, algunas de ellas llevadas al cine. Su épico viaje entre Gran Bretaña y Japón, El gran bazar del ferrocarril (1972), lo catapultó a la fama y constituye un clásico del género. En 1981 recibió el James Tait Black Memorial Prize por La costa de los mosquitos, posteriormente objeto de una adaptación cinematográfica a cargo de Peter Weir.
