James Herbert nació en Londres en 1943. Trabajó como director artístico en una empresa de publicidad hasta que en 1977 lo dejó para dedicarse a la literatura a tiempo completo.
Fue el escritor de terror más vendido en Gran Bretaña; sus veintitrés novelas han vendido más de 54 millones de copias en todo el mundo. La World Horror Convention le invistió como Gran Maestro del Terror en 2010, año en el que también recibió un OBE (Orden del Imperio Británico) de la Reina Isabel II por sus servicios a la literatura.
James Herbert murió en su casa de Sussex el 20 de marzo de 2013.
