JOHN BANVILLE (Wexford, Irlanda, 1945), novelista, dramaturgo y guionista, está considerado como uno de los escritores en lengua inglesa con mayor imaginación de la actualidad. A lo largo de su trayectoria, Banville ha recibido numerosos premios. En 1989, su novela El libro de las pruebas fue finalista del Premio Booker y ganó el Premio Guinness Peat Aviation. En 2005, su decimocuarta novela, El mar, obtuvo el Premio Booker. En el año 2011, Banville recibió el Premio Franz Kafka, y en 2013 fue galardonado con el Premio Irish PEN de Literatura y el Premio Estatal Austriaco de Literatura Europea. En el año 2014 obtuvo el Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Letras. Ha publicado un número considerable de novelas bajo el seudónimo Benjamin Black, la mayoría de las cuales cuentan con Quirke como protagonista,un patólogo irlandés afincado en Dublín.
