Charles Dickens (1812-1870) és un dels novel·listes més llegits i traduïts de tots els temps. Fill d'un funcionari de províncies que acabà a la presó, Dickens va viure una infància dura i trista, mancat del suport material i afectiu més elemental. Aquesta etapa marcaria decisivament la seva obra, sobretot en novel·les com Oliver Twist, David Copperfield o Grans esperances, totes protagonitzades per nens orfes o desvalguts que s'han d'enfrontar a la crueltat dels adults per sobreviure. De formació autodidacta, Dickens va ser corresponsal parlamentari del Morning Chronicle. El 1836 va iniciar la publicació en fulletó d'Els documents pòstums del club Pickwick, que li va donar una gran popularitat. Posteriorment va publicar títols fonamentals de la novel·la europea del segle XIX, com ara Oliver Twist (1837), David Copperfield (1849), El casalot (1853), Temps difícils (1854), Història de dues ciutats (1859) o Grans esperances (1861).
