Ali Smith nació en Inverness (Escocia) en 1962 y vive en Cambridge. Su primer libro de cuentos, Free Love, ganó el Satire First Book Award y el Scottish Arts Council Award en 1995. Su primera novela, Like, apareció en 1997 y su segundo libro de cuentos, Other Stories and Other Stories, en 1999.
