Willa Cather (Winchester, 1873 - Nova York, 1947), escriptora nord-americana nascuda en el si d'un família irlandesa, va estudiar a la Universitat de Nebraska i durant uns quants anys es va dedicar al periodisme i a l'educació. Després d'haver publicat un poemari i un recull de relats, l'any 1912 publica la seva primera novel·la, Alexander's bridge, i, des d'aquell moment, es dedica exclusivament a l'escriptura. D'entre les seves novel·les, destaquen My Ántonia (1918), One of ours (1922), que va ser guardonada amb el premi Pulitzer, A lost lady (1923), La mort s'adreça a l'arquebisbe (1927) i Shadows on the rock (1931).
