(1810-1865) És una de les grans escriptores angleses del segle xix. Va escriure contes, novel·les i una biografia de Charlotte Brontë que encara avui és de referència. Amiga de Charles Dickens, John Ruskin i altres escriptors, va fer-se famosa amb la seva primera novel·la, Mary Barton (1848), sobre les classes treballadores de Manchester, i va continuar tenint un gran èxit popular amb novel·les sobre personatges femenins de caràcter fort, sovint ambientades al camp, i amb relats de misteri, molt del gust de l'època.
En els darrers anys la seva obra s'està revalorant per la modernitat de la seva mirada literària i la profunditat de la seva observació psicològica.
