Periodista, guionista i novel·lista (1905- 1976), figura entre els autors estatunidencs més destacats del segle XX. Va ser inclòs en les llistes negres de Hollywood i va haver de treballar durant anys amb pseudònim. Va guanyar dos Oscar -reconeguts posteriorment- pels guions de Vacances a Roma (1953) i The Brave One (1956). El 1960 se'l va reconèixer públicament com a guionista d'Èxode i Espàrtac. El 1971 va dirigir la versió cinematogràfica de Johnny va agafar el fusell.
