Alexis de Tocqueville (París, 1805-Cannes, 1859). Destacó por sus ideas liberal-repúblicanas y su lúcida reflexión sobre la democracia moderna. Escribió La Democracia en América (1835-1840) que fue consideradada rápidamente como obra maestra. Llegó a ser ministro de Asuntos Exteriores en 1849. Su protesta contra el golpe de Estado de Napoleón III le llevaría a abandonar la vida política y a escribir su segunda obra maestra El Antiguo Régimen y la Revolución (1856). Es ampliamente reconocido en la actualidad como un clásico imprescindible para pensar a fondo la realidad presente y futura de nuestras democracias.
