Nacida  en  Tomgraney,  Irlanda, Edna O?Brian (1930) es autora de novelas y cuentos cuya acción transcurre generalmente en su país natal. Escritora polifacética y prolífica, cultiva también otros géneros ?poesía, biografía, literatura infantil, piezas de teatro y guiones? y es miembro honorario de la Academia Americana de las Artes y las Letras.
Sus  libros  han alcanzado un éxito notable, sobre todo en Estados Unidos. El San Francisco Chronicle ha dicho de ella que es «la  digna  heredera  de  sus  grandes  antecesores en la literatura irlandesa» y Le Figaro ha señalado que «el aliento de su lenguaje  es  comparable al de Faulkner». Entre los premios que ha recibido figuran el Irish PEN, por toda su trayectoria, el del  Gremio  de Escritores de Gran Bretaña, el Premio Cavour en Italia, la Medalla de Oro de las Artes en Estados Unidos y la Medalla Ulises.
