Bertolt Brecht, además de poeta y narrador, es uno de los principales dramaturgos alemanes contemporáneos. Tras exiliarse durante el nazismo, en 1949 fundó el Berliner Ensemble, compañía que dirigió junto a su mujer, Helene Weigel, y con la que representó todas sus obras. Su teatro está focalizado en despertar la actividad intelectual del espectador, la toma de conciencia. Busca la reflexión más que la emoción, la razón más que el sentimiento para lograr el "efecto de distanciamiento" de espectador y actor.
