Alessandro Manzoni (1785-1873), novelista, poeta y dramaturgo, además de Los novios (1823), obra que señala el nacimiento de la novela moderna italiana, escribió la oda a la muerte de Napoleón El cinco de mayo (1821), el volumen de poemas religiosos Los himnos sacros (1812-1815) y las tragedias románticas Conde de Carmagnola (1820) y Adelchi (1822). Nació y murió en Milán, pero vivió unos años en París. Claro exponente del Romanticismo, es uno de los escritores italianos más representativos del siglo XIX.
