Kurt Vonnegut (1922-2007) és un dels narradors més originals de la literatura nord-americana contemporània, conegut per la seva peculiar combinació de sàtira, comèdia negra i ciència ficció. Autor popular i de culte a la vegada, Vonnegut ha sabut passar el món que li va tocar viure per un filtre excèntric i divertit. D'Escorxador-5, la seva obra més celebrada, se n'han fet adaptacions teatrals i cinematogràfiques. L'experiència del jove Kurt Vonnegut, soldat d'infanteria i presoner de guerra durant la Segona Guerra Mundial, va tenir una influència profunda en tota la seva obra posterior. A Escorxador-5 (1969) descriu les vicissituds d'un personatge desorientat que en plena Alemanya nazi es despenja del seu batalló i erra entre línies enemigues fins que les tropes de la Wehrmacht l'empresonen . Vonnegut és capaç de convertir l'experiència bèl·lica en un seguit de vinyetes divertides i sarcàstiques sense banalitzar el dolor de la guerra.
